Prices and costs – Coal 2020 – Analysis
Thermal coal, traded in the Pacific Basin, can be categorised by its calorific value (CV). Although there is a potential for substitution between the various qualities of coal, the differences represent separate market segments.
To handle wet coal, coal jigs were used. Coal jigs separated coal from impurities by using gravity. Since the relative density of uniformly sized pieces of coal, slate, ash, dirt, and sulphur vary, pieces of each element will descend through water at different speeds—allowing them to be separated. Some examples of coal jigs from the beginning of the 20th century include:
Industrially, the most common dense media is a suspension of fine magnetite and/or ferrosilicon particles. An aqueous solution as a dense medium is used in coal processing in the form of a belknap wash and suspensions in air are used in water-deficient areas, like areas of China, where sand is used to separate coal from the gangue minerals.

Coal combustion is a dirty process, releasing a range of pollutants including sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, ash and a range of heavy metals. If these are not controlled they can enter the atmosphere, causing damage to the environment and to human health.
Coal Washing | Encyclopedia
Coal washing Coal that comes from a mine is a complex mixture of materials with a large variety of physical properties. In addition to the coal itself, pieces of rock, sand, and various minerals are contained in the mixture. Thus, before coal can be sold to consumers, it must be cleaned. The cleaning process consists of a number of steps that results in a product that is specifically suited to ...

· The separated fractions differ in ash yield, and the separation of low ash fractions could be beneficial for applications where low ash material is required; for example, where low-rank coal is to be utilised as a feedstock for higher value products like activated carbon and carbon fibre products or liquid fuel products.
The sizing process usually follows the crushing process. The three major reasons for sizing the coal are to separate coal into various sizes for marketing, to feed washing and dewatering units, and to recover the solids used to control the specific gravity in these washing devices. Sizing of the coal is performed by screening or classification.
